On June 22, 2014 ESPN launched it’s latest technological marvel, the Digital Center II.  DC2 is the flashy new home to ESPN’s flagship shows, SportsCenter and NFL Football.  The 194,000 ft2 state of the art, “future-proof” facility contains 5 studios, 6 production control rooms, and 4 audio control rooms.  At the Center of the 9,700 ft2 main studio X is massive glass wall that cuts the room into Studio X; which serves as the primary live set for ESPN and ESPN 2 SC editions; and Studio XA which is home to ESPNEWS editions of SC and pre-produced SC segments.

“From the set’s 114 monitors to the new graphics and animations packages, the new [SC] is a truly remarkable piece of television, especially considering more than 85 percent of the core technologies in DC-2 didn’t even exist before ESPN created them or had them created.”

At the building’s core is a ground-breaking JPEG 2000-based IP routing system, supported by an almost entirely fibre based broadcast infrastructure.  DC2 was integrated for 3G-SDI, with capabilities to move right into 4K, 8K and beyond.

The Unity Systems Integration team was selected from a group of the top integrators in North America to provide integration support for DC2. The UnitySI Engineering team partnered with ESPN Engineering to design and document every Production, Audio and Media Control Room, Edit Suite, Equipment Room, and Studio in the building.  UnitySI is now currently working on smaller projects to finish up the remaining rooms in DC2.
