EchoStar Broadcasting Corporation relocated its data center operations to a new state of the art, Tier III, 76,000 sq. ft. data center in Cheyenne, WY. Because a physical relocation to a new facility would require a complete shutdown of services for an extended period of time, that could potentially jeopardize QIS, the integration team managed a strategic, hybrid logical-physical move. Internal and external staff were deployed to complete a migration that was transparent to ongoing IT and business operations.

The Unity team was called on to provide project management, systems documentation, materials, cable and mechanical installation, and text and commissioning services. The new facility includes hot-and-cold aisle containment, redundant power, and MPO fiber technology connected by fiber ties to the existing uplink facility. The data centre is equipped with interconnecting MPO trunks, fiber patching, MRJ21 backbone infrastructure and CAT cable patching. The entire data centre infrastructure was built to current TIA and Telecordia/Belcore telecommunications standards.

EchoStar Broadcasting offers a managed, over-the-top video service that supports live TV streaming, a vault of on-demand fare and a network-based DVR. EchoStar will use adaptive bit-rate coding technology pioneered by Move Networks to boost or downshift the bit-rate and quality of a video stream based on available bandwidth. The amount of bandwidth required varies by the device, but estimates are that the service will need 3Mbit/s to 4Mbit/s for an HD stream to look great on a 50-inch TV screen.

EchoStar’s network DVR will handle ingest and caching on the service provider’s network, or centrally at EchoStar’s new data centre located in Gilbert, Arizona, where Unity provided project management, systems documentation, materials, cable and mechanical installation and test and commissioning services.
